PG&E, Northern California's largest utility, has more than 100,000 miles of power lines in its 70,000-square-mile territory, half of which is designated by the state as a high fire threat, according to the company. The utility's equipment in the past several years has caused more than 30 wildfires that have resulted in dozens of deaths, thousands of destroyed homes, a bankruptcy filing and a guilty plea by PG&E to 84 felony counts of involuntary manslaughter. To help 'solve this incredible problem,' PG&E two years ago announced its plan to bury one-third of its 30,000 miles of overhead power lines that traverse high-fire-risk areas.
