Bloomfield College officially has a new name and a new path forward after more than 150 years as a private institution. The college is now part of Montclair State University after completing a complex merger process requiring multiple approvals, including legislation signed by Gov. Phil Murphy on Friday, officials said. The two schools reached an agreement last fall to merge in order to save financially-troubled Bloomfield College from shutting down. Bloomfield College adopted its new name — Bloomfield College of Montclair State University — on Saturday, meeting a July 1 deadline officials set last year to complete the merger of the small private college and the large public university.
